Additional Lake Michigan Trip - Manitou
Brad Hughey has agreed to sponsor a trip to Manitou Island the weekend of Sept 11. This could be challenging since there is an 8.5 mile open crossing from the mainland out to Manitou island in Lake Michigan. Brad said that if it's too rough - there are other places to paddle in the area. Due to the long open crossing, spray skirts, rescue training, and some comfort in moderate sea conditions required.
Everyone will be expected to complete rescue training and practice together before this trip. Jim S. |

Manitou
Manitou island is a great trip. I have been up there 4 times and paddled to the island 3 of the 4 times, once it was to rough, two of the trips we had 2-4 foot waves which sems to be pretty common, one trip it was glassy smooth going out and back. Be sure to plan for an extra day on the island if conditions are to rough to paddle in on your return day. There is also a ferry that makes the trip, we have had good luck with non paddlers taking it out and camping with the paddlers. The ferry is also an option , we once had two of our paddlers that didnt like the conditions for the day of our return so they took the ferry in. They will take you if there is room which in Sep that should not be a problem but they do charge the round trip price plus money for the kayaks. The only draw back to the ferry is it returns to a different location than where the paddle out starts so you still need some one to paddle back to the cars and then drive about 30 min north to the ferry dock. One other thing to watch out for is you do cross the shipping channel, the lake freighters move faster than you think so be on the look out and know when your in the shipping channel. Jim, I think you have my E mail so if you have any questions or you want to see some pictures from my trips send me a note......Jay
