Here's more info.
This is an e-mail I sent Dan V a few months ago and his response:
Dan, This past and last year over Labor Day, I attended a New River Rendezvous near Fayetteville, WV. This rendezvous includes several paddling groups, though most from the East Coast. They range from newbies, to intermediate to a large group of excellent paddlers. Open boats, hard boats, several Shredders, rafts and even a couple of duckies were paddled. Really good paddlers bringing family along often could get a lesser- or non-experienced family member into a larger raft so they can enjoy the river together. Every effort is made to accommodate everyone's skills/prefs. This year, for example, I Shredded the Gorge on Friday and Sunday, and paddled my Torrent SOT on the Thurmond to Cunnard section on Saturday. I had a different Shredder partner each time (and I don't own a Shredder). The trip leader, Mike Sawyer, is also a near pro photographer with the equipment to match, and likes to go ahead in the group to catch everyone's photos through some of the rapids. His hosting site allows free downloads for anyone that wants theirs. Here's this year's crop: http://mikesawyer.smugmug.com/Portf...0/9557235_QTBQb (And, Yes, that's me swimming Surprise in the green Torrent, lol) If you want to see a small sample of the guy's WW experience, check out this page: http://mikesawyer.smugmug.com/Outdoor-Sports/Whitewater Every day there were options to do one of the two upper, easier sections of the New River, or the Gorge. The Gorge is most popular, of course. Last year, however, the levels were a bit higher and many more took advantage of the "lighter" sections. Shuttles are loosely organized but always effective and efficient enough. They camp at Ray's campground, which is a wonderful, quiet and clean campground run by, you guessed it, Ray and his wife. They're on site most of the time and great people. They really care about their customers and won't tolerate anyone causing trouble, which is nice for everyone else. Camping is $8/person/night. Cabins are also available (bunk houses only, no baths) for an additional $30/cabin/night (on top of the $8/person). Shower house is nice, well kept. http://rayscampground.com/ Ok, now for why in the world I'm giving you all of these details. We need to have it on our schedule next year. I've been asked by the trip leader who invited me for the first time last year, and someone I now consider a good friend, to get the HCC involved and coming. "The more the merrier" is the idea. There were probably 100+ people camping/paddling this year, probably more like 150 last year. It's also a great family get away for Labor Day because non-paddling family have so many other options, rafting, hiking, biking, sight-seeing, great restaurants in the area, etc. So, what'dya think? Dan's response (edited for brevity): Absolutely, Dan, I'd love to see that on our schedule. I had in mind a trip sort of like that for the HCC, I was about to lead it myself this year, over Labor Day, but than, the reality of two other big events (Pirate paddle, and the Hoosier Outdoor Experience) so close after Labor Day sort of put me off the idea of leading it myself. I was looking at the Nantahala area, but the New would also be great. I would like to see this event slanted (marketed?) toward the flatwater people as well as the whitewater bunch. We need events that bring everyone together, and what you described could sure do that. You know, we have a few rafts in the club, and Doug T. has a shredder (Kokomo-), and of course, we could always jump in boats, maybe rent something. |

Hey Dan,
The trips schedule posted thus far is just a very rough draft and only contains what Crush and Bigg Drop have submitted (I only cut & pasted early this morning). The Labor Day trip to the New River Gorge area sounds like fun and we will place that on the schedule as well. Crush and Bigg Drop may still opt to hold a Class IV-V trip elsewhere that weekend though since the Gauley won't be releasing yet and the Class IV-V creeks/rivers in WV are rain dependent if they aren't hydro-regulated. Thanks for posting the information on this weekend! I think it will be positive to try to integrate the flatwater and the whitewater groups together. Maybe we should make more of an effort to try this for the Memorial Day trip too??? ![]() For anyone else who is wanting to lead a whitewater trip in 2010, I believe the HCC Trips planning meeting is scheduled for January 24th. Please see the newsletter for details. We especially need more volunteers to lead beginners to Class II-III trips..... HINT HINT!!! Suzi |

June 26-27 Ocoee Trip
Dear Friends,
Since I do not know yet where my life will lead, due to being unemployed, I am hesitant to commit to leading any trips. However, I will be going to the Ocoee, still my favorite river, on my birthday weekend. So, I will be leading a trip on the Ocoee on June 26-27 for all of those who would like to join. Also, wanted to say that during the paddling season I tend to paddle somewhere every other week. So, if I am still in the area this year, watch the board for trips as I wil likely plan a trip a week in advance. -Monica |

Suzi -- I will lead a beginner trip to the Elkhorn in mid-April (the 17th or weekend before, not sure yet but I'll firm it up) -- as always, not for first-timers but everyone with some moving water skills welcome.

Not to start a debate, but if the Elkhorn isn't for first timers, what is, at least as far as WW goes? YoS |

Beginners should start on moving water, maybe Class I. Just to get a feel for how the water affects their boats and to develop skills entering and exiting eddies. Once those skills are developed, the Flatrock at a reasonable level or the Big Pine below a foot are good. Not having basic skills for handling a boat in moving water is not a good thing above a low head dam. My one time down the Elkhorn was at pretty low levels and I wouldn't take a first timer on it.

YoS -- Beginner trips are among the hardest to lead, given the varying abilities of newbies. Some people make it up to the Gauley their first year, but they are exceptions. Some first-timers would be fine on the Elkhorn, but it's Class II, and most people will get more out of it if they have some experience in moving water -- like the Flatrock. Last year, we had 25 on the Elkhorn. If they were first-timers it would be a long day. And two years ago, someone who had some moving water experience but wasn't confident paddled into a strainer on one of the easier rapids on the Elkhorn. Flipped and went right under it. Fortunately, he flushed out and just swam. But I was reminded that people without experience can get hurt in Class II, so I prefer to be on the safe side.

I'd agree with you Rob...
I think the most important thing I learned that first full year of mine was "boat control." I didn't know what all of that meant, but knowing that, was huge in my improvement. Can't wait for the weather to turn---had a good fall of paddling on the BP. Ed even got me to start with the surfing; I may have to get out and purchase one of them playboats in the future. Anways, I'd be more than happy to throw some help your way when the Elkhorn trip comes along. |

The East Race season is weekends, June 12 to August 8. I will be offering small group instruction to HCC members during the public season. Instruction would be for beginners who have at least begun to learn to roll. The small group sizes should allow one on one instruction at times so you can work on what you want or need to improve on. I plan on being at a majority of public days but there will be some that I will not be able to attend and have not figured that out yet.

Correction: April Clear Creek Trip is Class II-III (not just II)
Dan Valleskey indicated that his April 23-25 trip will include Class 2 and 3 sections of Clear Creek. The original schedule had indicated that it was only Class 2.

Boater Chick Fest - DATE CHANGE!
Just saw on Boater Talk that the date for Boater Chick Fest this year will be May 21-23, NOT May 8-9 as listed on our WW Trip Schedule.
This means that I cannot co-organize the trip since I will be in Africa then. I don't know whether Monica can do it then or not. Sharon Quote:
